The FSC Principles and Criteria were first published in November 1994 and they were amended in 1996, 1999 and 2001.
Version 5-0 is the result of a long term process of reviewing and improving the FSC Principles and Criteria, which began in January 2009 and ended in February 2012.
During the 7th General Assembly of the FSC Members in Seville (Spain), Motion 7 was approved, which brought amendments to Criteria 6.5, 6.9, 9.1 and 10.6 in terms of clarity and consistency.
These modifications resulted in Version 5-1 of the FSC Standard for Forest Management.
Version 5-2 was published in June 2015 and only brought some corrections to spelling mistakes.
The Standard for the FSC Principles and Criteria is the key document for the forest management certification of any forest management unit or forest directorate wishing to hold a FSC certificate.
All the 10 Principles and Criteria related are to be obligatorily observed by any management unit which intends to have a valid certificate and to trade FSC certified products. The meeting of all the standard requirements must cover all the activities carried out by the management unit, either directly or by subcontracting.
The FSC Principles and Criteria as well as the standards which are the basis of the National Standard development can be downloaded below.
Apart from the FSC Principles and Criteria and the International Generic Indicators and in close connection with the forest management certification process there are some standards with mandatory role in the development of a National Standard.
To complement the standards and for a better understanding of the way in which they are to be applied, the FSC Board of Directors approved a series of directives and procedures.
The main Policies and Directives on which the development of a national Standard is based are as follows:
During the 68th meeting of the FSC Board of Directors in March 2015, the International Generic Indicators were approved as starting point and reference document for the development of the National Standards.
This Standard (FSC-STD-60-004 V1-0) together with the FSC Principles and Criteria is obligatorily used by the Standard Development Groups in the development of a national standard. The role of the Indicators is to bring more value by:
- Ensuring a unitary implementation of the Principles and Criteria at global level; improving and strengthening the reliability of the FSC certification system.
- Improving the contents and quality of the FSC National Standards
- Contributing to making the National Standards development process more efficient
The International Generic Indicators are to be found in Standard: FSC-STD-60-004 V1-0 EN International Generic Indicators
